Prednisone And Fibromyalgia

Prednisone belongs to corticosteroid hormones that are commonly used by physicians to treat inflammatory and autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, lupus, asthma, etc. Even though fibromyalgia does not cause, or is not caused by inflammation, some physicians treat fibromyalgia with prednisone. And, fibromyalgia is not classified as autoimmune disease also so that the use of prednisone to treat fibromyalgia is still debated.

Because fibromyalgia patients are known to have overactive immune system, and prednisone is a known immune suppressant, some doctors contend that it can be used to treat the disorder. This decision is also met with joy among some fibromyalgia patients because they've notice some reduction in their symptoms after being given prednisone. And fibromyalgia have no definite cure so that some doctors want to hit the enemy by using several ammunitions.

The immunosuppressant asset of prednisone is also its liabilities. Prednisone is very effective to suppress the immune system of a person. Other doctors contend that prescribing prednisone for fibromyalgia may put patients in an unnecessary health risk. Patients will become more susceptible to infections from pathogenic microorganisms, and their body's natural ability to combat other serious diseases maybe be unnecessarily put off.

Some doctors would rather prescribe other anti-inflammatory medications that prednisone. And fibromyalgia patients are now keen on using more natural plant based anti-inflammatory rather than prednisone. Glucosamine is one of these natural anti-inflammatory that is used by fibromyalgia patients. A good number of them are finding glucosamine to help ward off inflammation, which fibromyalgia patients are more susceptible of developing.

If you are a fibromyalgia sufferer and you want to try prednisone to help you with your symptoms, you can do so. Discuss your concerns with your doctor and ask him to educate you about the full side effects of prednisone. And fibromyalgia is possible to contain using conventional as well as alternative forms of medication.
