Fibromyalgia Trigger Points
Before discussing the fibromyalgia trigger points or tender points, it's good to differentiate the two early on. Fibromyalgia per se have no trigger points, but it has tender points. Trigger points are hyperirritable spots in the muscles. They can be felt through palpation because they form nodules in a taut band of muscles. Tender points on the other hand are determined spots in the body that hurts among fibromyalgia patients when pressure is applied to it. There are 18 tender points in the human body.
The notion about fibromyalgia trigger points is wrong. Trigger points when stimulated will generate pain that is not localized on the nodule area, but it can trigger pain elsewhere in the body: the so called “referred pain.” The palpable nodules of trigger points often developed in taut muscles, tendons, joints, and ligaments. And, pain caused by trigger points can cause muscular weakness of the tissues affected, which do not occur in fibromyalgia pain attacks.
Tender points on the other hand are determined spots in the body. There are 18 of them, two each in the: a) occiput, b) low cervical, c) trapezius, d) supraspinatus, e) second rib, f) lateral epicondyle, g) gluteal, h) greater trochanter, and i) knee. In order to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia, patients must be super sensitive in at least 11 of these tender points.
To help diagnose fibromyalgia, in fact, doctors apply some pressure to these tender points and the resulting pain could be unbearable to fibromyalgia suffers. But, the pain is localized on the tender point area, it will not radiate to the other parts of the body - very different from trigger points. Moreover, it does not cause muscle weakness in the other parts of the body.
Perhaps people, and even health professionals, mistakenly associate trigger points and tender points as the same because they both generate pain when stimulated. But generally speaking, there is no such thing as fibromyalgia trigger points.
