Fibromyalgia Thryroid Levels

Patients, and surprisingly some doctors, find it difficult to tell the difference between fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and thyroid-problem-related disorders. Because the symptoms of fibromyalgia and hypothyroidism are so close (headaches, muscle and joint pains, depression, fatigue, etc.), doctors often diagnose hypothyroidism as fibromyalgia. And, thyroid levels are easily corrected with thyroid hormone supplement; so patients would have been well after few days of hormone supplements.

If you are diagnosed with fibromyalgia, it’s good to ask other doctors opinion about your diagnosis. Consult another rheumatologist or an internist and ask him to test you with thyroid-related disorders. Fibromyalgia and thyroid levels disorder can exists together, but oftentimes the problem is just the person is having the symptoms of hypothyroidism. It’s best to subject yourself to these entire tests than to live with FMS, which has no definite cure, for the rest of your life.

Dr. Lowe, the leader of Fibromyalgia Research Foundation, said that fibromyalgia is often the result of untreated hypothyroidism or thyroid hormone cellular resistance. He has seen significant improvement in the symptoms of fibromyalgia patients after they have been given medications for thyroid-hormone related disorders. Imagine you could get better after receiving thyroid hormone supplement pill!

Fibromyalgia and thyroid levels imbalances are now being studied further to give definite cure for FMS. Already there has been promising result after a fibromyalgia patient is subjected to thyroid hormone tests and given proper supplements. So why other doctors have seemingly didn’t catch the thyroid hormone level abnormality in the first place? Dr. Lowe said that patients with thyroid hormone cellular resistance often show normal levels of systemic thyroid hormone levels but still manifest the symptoms of hypothyroidism, which is very similar to FMS. That’s why some doctors are that quick to give the FMS diagnosis.

Because of the evidence of fibromyalgia and thyroid levels connection, all patients suspected of having FMS but showing normal levels of thyroid hormones are advised to consult a competent endocrinologist to delve deeper into testing thyroid-related disorders.
